Topic: “Improving Fire Alarm Intelligibility Through Technology”

Since the release of the 2010 Edition of NFPA 72 and recent changes in Model Building Codes, fire alarm systems have an increased use of audio loudspeakers which require intelligibility.  This presentation will feature how a designer can use new technology in loudspeaker design and placement to increase intelligibility.  This will include information on newer loudspeaker products and practical suggestions on loudspeaker design.  Special focus will be on difficult spaces that present intelligibility challenges due to highly reverberant surfaces. 

This presentation will feature the following learning objectives: 

• What are the code requirements regarding intelligibility? 
• What are some practical suggestions for improving loudspeaker designs?
• What new technology in fire alarm loudspeaker design is available?
